Old Friend Revisited #5: The Mortal Instruments

There’s more to the world than what meets the mundane eyes. Clary Fray accidentally discovers this when she witnesses the killing of a demon by Shadowhunters, even if she doesn’t see it that way at the very beginning. From that moment on her life will make a turn of 180 degrees.

Full of action, love, sass, sexy warlocks and wtf moments, The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare is one of my favorite books series of all time, sure many may say that The Infernal Devices and The Dark Artifices are written way better, but there’s something about reading these books first and falling in love with the characters that make me love this one series more than the others.

Without any further ado, let’s talk about it!

When did you start reading the books?

I think i read the first two books or one and a half back in 2012… but i wasn’t really sure if i liked it. Then  in 2014 i picked them up again, reread the first one, finished the second at last and read all the others… the second time around i fell in love with the series in the first book.

Why did you start reading them?

The first time it was completely by chance, i went to a bookstore and told the girl working there i was looking for finished trilogies and she told me about them, i bought then the first three books (yeah, i tend to buy books just by chance, i don’t even check if i may like them…). Back at the timei was trying to get back on the reading train, and since i had no patience for short stories where i get attached to books and they are already over, i was looking for long series and trilogies in which i can immerse myself for a longer while. So yeah, i just started reading the first book just because, i didn’t knew anything about it back then.

When did you knew you love the books so much they’d become a favorite?

Mmm, the second time i started reading them, i just, there was something really on point at the time for me to love the books, i was looking for something to obsess about (…) and there were so many books, and such lovable characters (aka Magnus Bane & Isabelle Lightwood & Simon Lewis & Raphael) i just, i couldn’t put them down and i knew i was hooked for good.

How many times did you read the books?

I don’t know, because the second time around, i was so obsessed with them i read them and reread them and listened to them, those were some wild months i spend all the day all days thinking, reading, and breathing TMI..

Who is your favorite character?

I think i talk about him before because he is my biggest fictional crush, Magnus Babe… i mean Magnus Bane. He is like, asdfghjkl;; …. i don’t really have words, i totally love him!

Who is your least favorite character?

Will i have to talk about this each and every time?  … man, this is difficult, and please don’t hatebe cause of this but my least favorite character in The Mortal Instruments series is Jace Whatever. I just,… i can’t deal with him. It’s like having an allergy, only instead to a thing, having it to a person.

OTP?

Obviously Malec, since all i want is for MAgnus to be happy (??). I was watching a review of the tv show the other day and the girl doing it said Malec is everyone’s OTP on the show, on the books, everywhere related to TMI, and though i’m not sure of that, i’m a 1,000,000% sure they are mine. Like, i love Sizzy and Lucelyn, but it’s nothing compared to my love for Malec. Malec is everything, okay? i just can’t cope with my feelings right now.

Favorite book?

Since there are two different trilogies that became a series,  i can choose one of each trilogy right? RIGHT?

My favorite from the first trilogy is City of Glass, i mean i commented on it already, but the first time i read the book i read it in a loop about three or four times, because i enjoyed it so freaking much. Ad for the second trilogy, my favorite is City of Lost Souls, because Team Good and Domestic!Malec and Sizzy and everything was so good, and happy and.. sorry, i’m just rereading the book and i’m too emotional XD.

Least favorite book?

 City of Fallen Angels, with all the dead babies and stuff, and Camille … and … pffffffffff, i just, there are too many not nice things in that book 

 

 

 

 

 

One thing you just totally love;

Magnus Bane, Alexander Lightwood. I really love the idea of a group of people that fight demons to keep humankind safe. Like, i wish i was one of the nephilim, because damn, that looks just a hell of fun.. >_<, aaaaaaaaaah, i want runes to help me go through with my daily life…

One thing you dislike;

There aren’t enough more books about these specific characters. Like, i totally love that there are more books about the shadow world, but i’m attached to these characters, i don’t want new ones, i want these and i want MAGNUS, LOTS, AND LOTS OF MAGNUS.

Would you recommend it?

Mmm, i would, even though many may say that the other trilogies on the shadow world are written better and such, i think thisis the best way to start, or maybe it’s better o read them in the order of publishing really, so you won’t get spoiled… but, you really should give this a chance if you are willing to enter the shadow world, because there’s so much in here, it’s such an amazing world to join… i think many people would enjoy these books.

Any last words about the series?

Nope, i think i just said everything i had to say about it…. I’m still wondering if i answered these questions on point though… this is too weird… Yeah, well… let’s move on!

Old Friend Revisited #4: Detective Conan

With a weird plot as a guy being shrunk to his 7 years old self, solving impossible and extremely creative cases and being on air for about20 years now, Detective Conan, Mentaitei Conan or Case Closed (whatever you want to call it) is one the of the shows i’ve been watching for the longest time in my life and though it hasa lot of WTF? moments, i totally love it!

So now, let’s talk about it for a bit!

Shinichi Kudo was a young detective that sometimes helped the Tokyo Police solve some murder cases until one day, during an investigation he was attacked by members of a crime organization who gave him a poison. However the poison doesn’t kill him and instead of that it turns him a little child again.

In order to find the organization who did this to him and an antidote he creates a cover identity with the help of a scientist friend and becomes “Conan Edogawa”, then he goes living with his childhood friend Ran Mouri and her father, without them knowing the truth and he helps the man, a terrible investigator, to solve the most difficult cases they come upon.

When did you start watching the show?

I was around 9 years old when i discovered this anime, there was this show called “the anime club” and in it they would marathon 4 episodes on Saturday/Sunday. It was the first anime i watched in that show and i liked it from the very moment i found it.

Why did you start watching it?

Well, it was when i just started obsessing over anime, and i would watch pretty much anything i could find in the tv, those were good times …

When did you knew you love the show so much it’d become a favorite?

I guess when i started crying because it was over (yeah right…), well the episodes they had were over, and they stopped showing it in “the anime club”, gosh, i was so so upset… hahha i cannot believe i actually cried because of that.. geez..

How many times did you watch the show?

Well, the dubbed stuff  i watched a million times, i still remember the solutions, but after a while it’s impossible to keep rewatching the show, i mean.. i’m planning on starting again soon, but the show it’s still running (since 1996) and it has more than 800 episodes and like, about or almost 20 movies.

Who is your favorite character?

 Shinichi Kudo/Conan Edogawa

They are the main character of the series (and i mean only one character because they are the same guy), and i totally love them, they are so funny, especially when being Conan and like being unable to actually show how smart he is, and then being “curious” so the older people may catch what he is trying to make them see and such. Like, he touches stuff he shouldn’t or he’d “randomly” ask questions that are so specific it will leave all the rest like “why would you think of that?” and he’ll be like “hehe, i heard of it in a tv show a few days ago”. It doesn’t make sense!

Other characters i really like are:

 

Shuichi Akai – this character has an amazing voice actor

 

Ran Mouri – this girl kicks some serious ass

 

Who is your least favorite character?

 

 Kogoro Mouri

I guess, he is suppose to be a humor relief character on the show, but i honestly cannot stand him at all.. poor Ran having to deal with him, him being her dad and all…

 

 

 

OTP?

 

Shinichi x Ran forever ❤

Obviously, since i’ve been ewatching this show for such a long time it would feel weird for me if i didn’t have an interest in the romantic relationships in it. My OTP and to be honest, one of my biggest OTPs is Shinichi and Ran… the only reason i’m wanting this show to end is so i can finally know if they get together… although i have the impression Ran will be HELLA MAD when she discovers he lied to her for such and long time and didn’ tell her he was Conan… but love conquers all, so i hope it ends well…

 

Favorite moment?

 Any Conan/Shinichi and Ran moment it’s really a favorite.

Least favorite moment?

*Spoilers* so i cannot say anything about it.

One thing you just totally love;

Most of the time at the end of another 100 episodes (more or less) there’sa “special” with more than two episodes… back in the day Shinichi would appear in these episodes and it’s mostly about the men in black. These episodes are always very entertaining and i’m always waiting for me..

One thing you dislike;

Because of the long run of the show it catches up with the manga a lot, and then they will stop releasing episodes for a while, so now i only watch the show about twice a year and as a binge watch of about 12-20 episodes, i wish i could watch it every other week! Well, that’s why i’m currently starting over from the very beginning.

Would you recommend it?

I totally would, to anyone willing to start watching a show with about 800 episodes… i mean,… there’s a need for a very strong will and a lot of free time to actually start watching the show now, but i guess it’s doable …. i’ll tell you when i finish rewatching all the episodes… but i guess, you can also watch the most important episodes (checking on the wikipedia and such) and catch up quickier or something, honestly there are some episodes you can totallly avoid…

Any last words about the show?

Well, Detective Conan it’s a very popular show in Japan, or so would you think when it has been o running for the last 20 years or so. It has it’s flaws (of which i’ll be talking soon in a special post) but in the end it’s a really fun watch… if you have the willing and the time, i recommend it a lot.

 

Old Friend Revisited #3: Evangelion

 

In the year 1995, an anime called Neon Genesis Evangelion was broadcast in Japan, … soon enough it became a huge success not only in it’s country but worldwide…

The idea it’s simple ;

Years after  a huge cataclism killed most of humanity,  weird beasts called ‘Angels’ appeared and started trying to destroy what’s left. A few chosen ones need to stop them before the manage to annihilate all humans… The only possible saviors, young teenagers piloting huge mechas that can fight the angels and kill them…

Now, Evangelion wasn’t just about mechas and destruction, but
about the psychology behind the characters, especially the main character Shinji Ikari, a young boy with a lot of issues…

When did you start watching the show?

I started watching the anime when i was about 10 years old.

Why did you started watching it?

To be honest it was completely random, a week before i discovered Saber Marionette J and i liked it, but it was really late in the night and i wasn’t allowed to stay up, so my stepdad recorded it, but the week he did it there was an Evangelion marathon, so i started watching it and it looked interesting so i kept watching until the end.

When did you knew you love the show so much it’d become a favorite?

I guess when i just bing watched all the episodes that were recorded (about 15)… since that moment i just loved it…

How many times did you watch the show?

Oh, too many to count (as any other thing i love.. i watch it too much), it was in a loop on tv, so every month i started watching it again.. it’s weird, because i did anything to not miss any episode even when i had them all taped,i run home every afternoon to watch the “new” episode.

Who is your favorite character?

 Asuka Langley Souryu Shinikami had always been one of my all time favorites and obviously my favorite from the anime itself. I liked the fact that she was a redhead like me, i liked her eva the most – it wasred and cool and she was awesome, because she was so smart (like, she graduated from an university by the age of 14)… also she has a temperament, and back then, i had one myself, so i felt like i could be like her or something… now, i obviously understand life better and all, but i still find her character fascinating, so i still really like her.

Who is your least favorite character?

 Ritsuko Akagi –  …

yeah, i know, how can i choose her when Gendo Ikari exists… but he was a great haracter, even as a crazy little (huge) s*** as he was… i acutally really enjoy his character, not so much Ritsuko, whom i never liked … she … i actually kind of always hated her, and hated what she did to Rei.. anyway, she annoys me to no end, so yes, i’m saying she is my least favorite ..

 

 

 

Favorite angel?

 Leliel, or whatever its name is, … i have no idea why i like it so much, i just know that its episode is my favorite one, all that happens in the episode and the aftermath of it… oh, and the way it’s killed… Now, looking at the picture i realize that’s not the angel’s real body, but you get the idea…if you watch the series and its episode you’ll see what i mean… Also, a second one that i really love is obviously Tabris … i won’t spoil anything.

Least favorite angel?

 Matariel , … i don’t like this angel or its episode, the thing looks like a freaking spider and i hate spiders, so i hate it…i just hate it.

 

 

 

 

 

One thing you just totally loved;

All the meaning behind even the little things, the names of the agencies ‘nerv’, ‘seele’, ‘gerihn’ (nerv, soul and brain respectively), the name of the angels being related of some aspect of the anel itself and so many little details in the series that it’s incredible to believe all that was random.. .there’s a guide to all the stuff mentioned on the show, i have a copy – it’s just great.

 

One thing you disliked;

The fact that for so long somany things were unanswered, and also that we had to wait soo long for the manga to be finished…

Would you recommend it?

Not to everyone, but if i know a person may enjoy this kind of story, well, of course, this is a gem of anime, sadly, so many won’t watch it because it’s a ‘cartoon’ … but it guess it’s their problem, not mine.

 

Any last words about the show?

I still watch it sometimes, its obviously in my top 1o and my top 5 (and my top 3), it’s ananime i enjoyed and keep enjoying, as i keep discovering little things whenever i watch it. As i said, this was an anime gem that many love, and many hate, and think it’s overrated.. to be honest, i don’t know and i cannot really be a judge of it because i grew up with it, and i totally love it.

Old Friend Revisited #2: The Simpsons

Emulating the real life of a regular family and city, The Simpsons are more than just a TV show, they are an icon of Western culture… From the very first season, and to this very day, the Simpsons represent everything we are as a society. With more than 20 seasons and a humor that crosses countries The Simpsons are here to stay, hopefully, for a very long time.

So, as you may have already understood …Today i want to share a little about my history with one of my favorite tv shows of all time, The Simpsons!

When did you start watching the show?

I’m pretty sure i’ve been watching the show since… forever … I remember being little and already wanting to get to Lisa’s age. The reruns on public tv had been there since i remember myself. I remember watching it on “TELEFE” an Argentinian channel Monday to Friday at 5pm (if  i recall it right). Heck a few months ago a show my mother watches was cancelled and when i asked her what will they put instead she was like “they my put The Simpsons’ reruns, that’s what they always do”, so yeah… Simpsons, Simpsons everywhere.

Why did you started watching it?

Well, it was just there all the time, so i’m guessing i just watched it because there was nothing else, but i ended up really liking the show, i mean, i LOVE the show.

When did you knew you love the show so much it’d become a favorite?

I’m not sure, because as i said, i’ve been watching it forever, but i guess the moment i didn’t mind i’ve already watched the episode running and rewatching it and enjoying it as if it was the first time.

How many times did you watch the show?

Too many to count, i’m serious, i gave up counting the times when i was about 10, and t’ s been almost 16 years since then…. also, i rewatch the show pretty much every two years (at least) and i mean i rewatch all the episodes, yes.

Who is your favorite character?

Lisa is without doubt one of the most influential characters in my life, i’ve been wanting to be her since i was little and i tried my best to be as close to her as possible… I guess since i’m the middle child as her i’ve always thought i should be her, but as i grew up i just found out i’m like her without even trying. I like the way she is, how she presents the racional thinking in the show, the fact that she is so smart ad her love for books and music, when still loving dolls, ponies and childish things. So, i guess she is my favorte character, most because i see so much on her, not only her being a simple character in a cartoon show, but a well rounded person.

Who is your least favorite character?

I don’t think i have one… okay, maybe the two aliens…. but only because they drool a lot and that’s just gross. Okay, Homer does too, but the aliens are freaking green and remind me of snakes which i hate.

Favorite season?

I don’t know, probably the first 15 seasons are my favorites, mostly because i find them to be the funniest.

Least favorite season?

mmm, it’s not like there’s one specific, because all the seaons have epsiodes i really laugh to, but in the last couple of seasons i found less episodes to laugh a lot about.. so i guess the last few seasons are least favorites.

One thing you just totally loved;

I really like the Halloween specials

One thing you disliked;

I totally hated the crossover with Family Guy, it felt so cheap.

Would you recommend it?

If you haven’t watched the Simpsons, i don’t understand where have you been living for the last two and a half decades! even aliens know about the show!  Even so, where i live people don’t seem to appreciate the show enough, people here prefer Family Guy, but okay… they loss.

I would recommend the show to anyone that wants to have a great laugh, the show is amazing and the characters are incredibly real and lovable!

Any last words about the show?

I love The Simpsons, and i know they aren’t as funny as they used to be, but the show is still great, i don’t know maybe i’m too invested in it to have a truthful opinion, but i’ve been watching it all my life and i’m too attached to the characters. I’ll watch the show until the very last episode, or my last day (whichever comes first).

Old Friend Revisited : The Office (US)

Last month i was feeling under the weather, i spent a lot of time at home, so i decided to rewatch one of my all time favorite tv shows, The Office.

So, what’s the office all about?

The series depicts the everyday lives of office employees in the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. To simulate the look of an actual documentary, it is filmed in a single-camera setup, without a studio audience or a laugh track. The show debuted on NBC as a mid-season replacement and ran for nine seasons, and 201 episodes. The Office features Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, B. J. Novak, Ed Helms, and James Spader on the main cast.

When did you start watching the show?

I think it was about 5 years ago…

Why did you started watching it?

I started watching the show when a roommate i had recomendad it to me. I was skeptic about watching this kind of comedy at first, but it catched and captivated me very quickly.

When did you knew you love the show so much it’ve become a favorite?

Pretty much after the “I’ve always been your biggest flan” joke in the pilot, i knew i had found a new favorite.

How many times did you watch the show?

I watched this show at least five times from begining to end and it never disappoints me. For some reason, for me the jokes don’t get old.

Who is your favorite character?

Most of the time is Jim Halper, but sometimes i think i prefer Dwight, … anyway, most of the time Jim.

Who is your least favorite character?

Ryan… i just hate him.

Favorite season?

Either four or five, i can’t choose.

Least favorite season?

It may be season nine.

One thing you just totally loved;

The pranks Jim was always doing to Dwight, it was freaking hillarious most of the time, the beets, bears, battleastar galactica is the best thing ever!

One thing you disliked;

I never found funny how people treated Toby, the HR guy, he was so nice to everyone, maybea little slow and such, but he didn’t deserve the hate he got.

Would you recommend it?

Yeah, i think it’s a great show, but all the people seem to not like it for some reason, although it may be because it has nine seasons and it’s pretty much a commitment, but i think you can just watch random episodes and enjoy it too…

Any last words about the show?

I don’t know… i mean, i think it’s a good show, mostly because most of its humor is healthy humor, it doesn’t go cheap, there’s only a few “that’s what she said” jokes, because there’s this character that likes them, but i believe it is good tv, not like the things that are now going on….

If you are looking for an easy going and funny show that won’t break your heart [much] i totally recommend this show to you!
