Getting late to the party, i recieved an arc of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion before it was published and i forgot i had it waiting for me […] but now that i read it i can finally review it and share it with you all!
Girl of Myth and Legend by Giselle Simlett
Genre: Fantasy, Magic, YA.
Publisher: WWS Publishing
Rating: 3.75 stars
Summary: A girl with a past she tries to forget, and a future she can’t even imagine.
Leonie Woodville wants to live an unremarkable life. She wants routine, she wants repetition, she wants predictability. So when she explodes in a blaze of light one morning on the way to her college, it’s enough to put a real crimp in her day.
And things only get weirder…
Leonie learns from her father that she is last of the Pulsar, a phenomenally powerful member of a magical species called the Chosen. It will be her sole duty to protect the Imperium, a governing hierarchy, from all enemies, and to exceed the reputation of the Pulsar before her. So – no pressure there, then.
Leonie is swept away from her rigorous normality and taken to a world of magic. There, she is forced into a ceremony to join her soul to a guardian, Korren, who is both incredibly handsome and intensely troubled, a relationship for which ‘it’s complicated’ just really doesn’t cut it.
But Leonie is soon to learn that this ancient world is no paradise. With violent dissidents intent to overthrow the Imperium, and dark entities with their own agenda, she and Korren find themselves caught in a war where they will have to overcome their differences if they are to survive.
Dare to dream. Dare to hope. Dare to be a legend.
My Opinion On The Book:
I’m going to say it first, because it’s something everyone would talk and critic about; the book has some stereotypes that make some of the story predictable. Yes, the girl, Leonie is a ‘Chosen’ that’s even the name of the characters and she has this companion, non-human (that is seen as worthless than human although he is supposed to be her protector), with whom she feels a strong connection he feels too, even though he “hates” her and all the Chosen.
This said, now i can talk about the story itself.
Although the path is predictable in a way, i need to talk about the way the author writes, because it’s wonderful… Even if just because of that i think is nice to read the book.
I think the world presented in the story has a very interesting potential, I’m looking forward to discover as the story will hopefully develop in the coming books.
To be honest, although the characters are in part archetypes of characters, i enjoyed them pretty much. It may be cheesy but i’m really liking the chemistry between Korren and Leonie and i’m looking forward to see their relationship develop, because i’ve already sailed with the ship.
On the plot; i believe the story has potential, if it gets messier it can be very interesting. There’s a lot that can be work with within the story, since we hadn’t seen much because this was just the beginning. I want to know more about what really happened 200 years ago, about Korren’s past, Leonie’s past. There are so many possibilities within it, i can understand why it was so stereotyped in the beginning, from there will have to see how it develops.
On the main characters; well, i liked them, i know Leonie already has a heroine complex, but most main characters have it … I especially enjoyed when Korren was the narrator, i’m really wanting to know more about his past, like ASAP. Overall, they are characters i can learn to love.
As for the other characters; there were some interesting ones, i won’t talk much about it because i’m afraid i may spoil some stuff, maybe, i don’t know. But i totally liked the ones there are. Again, if developed well, there are some interesting people there, i’m looking forward to know about.
Overall, the story can be developed in an engaging way, i would give it a chance until the end, mostly because it grows on you as you read it. As i said before there’s place for improvement, so i’ll be here to read the next book on the series, i really hope it’s next year, because i don’t think i can wait much to get my hands in that book. I nmy opinion the story is likable and as i said before, beautifully written.
If you decide to give it a chance, i really hope you enjoy it!
